      found in Historial Sketch of the Old Clinton Burying Ground, Town of Kirkland, www.rootsweb.com/~nyoneida/cemeteries/kirkland/clinton.html, 10/05, p.9:
      In the Spring of 1787, 5 or 6 CT families decided to seek new homes somewhere in the wilderness of Central NY. This little band of pioneers reached this vicinity Mar 4 and commenced a settlement on the site of the present village (Clinton), which was named by them later in honor of George Clinton, first governor of the state. The little colony being composed largely of good Puritan stock, soon felt the need of church privileges, and in 1792 organized themselves into a church and society, adopting the Congregation form of government, under the title of The Society of Clinton. In 1854 the form of church government was changed to Presbyterian, but the legal title has remained the same.
      The next common necessity required by the early settlers was a burial place. At a meeting of the Society of Clinton held in 1796 it was voted "to accept one acre of land as a gift from Bartholomew Pond, its owner for the said burial place, the society to fence and provide two gates, said Pond to have the feed and give the society a conveyance." The acre referred to is the southern half of the Old Burying Ground.

      Several Gridleys found in Middletown, CT, from Centenial Addresses, Middletown, CT, David D. Field, Heritage Books. Isaac Gridley a Justice of the Peace, d. 11-15-1836 age 82. Elizabeth Gridley, d. Oct. 30, 1848, age 16;

      from CT. Nutmegger, V. 26, p,217: Jonathan Gridley m. Mary Pinney 11/17/1714. Their son Job married Sybel Porter in Farmington on 2/4/1746. Job had brothers Abraham and J onathan. I am unable to verify which are Job's parents, Jonathan or Samuel Gridley.

      from the CT Nutmegger, Sept 1993, p. 218: For many years it was said that there was an over abundance of Gridleys in Clinton, NY. Descendants of both Samuel and Thomas Gridley of Farmington came to this area at the close of the 18th century. On 1887, the Clinton Courier reported "16 families of that name have their homes on one street, that is what is now Fountain St. "
