      Vacation Tragedy Takes Lives of Caro Couple

      The Caro Community was stunned by the tragic accidental deaths of Caro contractor Clifton C. Hiser and his wife, Margaret, a school teacher at the McComb Elementary School. The couple was found late Christmas Eve in their camper parked at a rest area off Interstate 75 approximately 3 miles south of Florence, Kentucky. They were enroute to Florida fro a Christmas vacation at the time.

      Boone County (KY) coroner Don Stith said that the Hiser’s, both 50, apparently died in their sleep sometime Wednesday night (Dec 22). An autopsy report disclosed that cause of death was due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Stith said the Caro couple was found around 11:30 pm. Christmas Eve and that there was no heat in the camper nor was there any leading gas detected at the time.

      Joint funeral services were conducted yesterday (Tuesday) at the Collon Funeral Home by Rev. Clive Dickins of the Caro United Methodist Church and by Fr. Terrence Raymond, pastor, of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Alpena. Burial followed in the Almer Cemetery.

      Mr. Hiser, who lived most of his life in Tuscola County, was self-employed as an excavating contractor. He was born at Saginaw August 23, 1926 and he and his wife, and son, Jeff, resided at 1690 E. Deckerville Rd., Caro. Mr. Hiser was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of the American Legion Theron Atwood Post # 7.

      Mrs. Hiser was born Margaret Alice Besky at Caro, July 6, 1926. She taught fifth grade at the McComb Elementary School in Caro and was a member of Sacred Heart Church of Caro.

      Mr. and Mrs. Hiser were married May 15, 1947 at Reese.

      Besides his son, Mr. Hiser is survived by his mother, Mrs. Calvin (Mabel) Hiser of Caro; 3 sisters, Mrs. Fred (Nina) Janks, Caro; Mrs. Louis (Beatrice) King, Kingston and Mrs. Archie (Geraldine) Ferguson, Utica; 3 brother’s, L.Z. Hiser, Mio; Adrian of Essexville and Carl of Caro.

      Mrs. Hiser is survived by her mother, Mrs. Harry (Mary) Hess, Caro; 5 sisters, Mrs. Paul (Reta) Jakubos, Everett; Mrs. Mark (Mildred) Nowland, North Fort Myers, Fla., Mrs. Carl (Lorraine) Jakubos, Caro; Mrs. Clarence (Ruth) Stevens, Vassar; and Mrs. Arland (Janet) Whitfield, Caro; 1 brother, Fred Hess, Caro; 1 step-sister, Mrs. Curtis (Gladys) Ball, Flint; 3 step-brothers, Raymond Hess of Vassar, Lyle Hess of Tampa, Fla and Clyde Hess of Caro.
