Notes - CARBONDALE- J.D. Durkin, 76, passed away on Friday, April 2, 2010 at Brookside Manor in Overbrook. He was born on January 14, 1934 in Humboldt the son of John and Mona Willhite Durkin. J.D. grew up in Humboldt and had lived in Carbondale since 1962. He worked as an installer for A.T.&T. for 38 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1956. He had served as Mayor and City Councilman for Carbondale, he was with the Carbondale Volunteer Fire Department for 46 years and was a First Responder for 8 years. He was a member of the Kiwanis, the Carbondale Grange and the Community United Church of Christ. He was on the Osage County Election Board, the Zoning Committee, was a Boy Scout Leader and Baseball coach. On May 31, 1957 J.D. was married to LaVaughn Hudson in Miami, OK. J.D. is survived by his wife LaVaughn, his six children, Vicki Doze (Kent) of Carbondale, Coleen Remington (Lonnie) of Topeka, Darrell Kent (Diana) of Thornton, CO., Norman Kent of Humble, TX., David Durkin (Brenda) of Carbondale and Tammy Marstall (the late Fred) of Carbondale, two brothers, Robert Durkin of Springfield, MO. and Raymond Durkin of Osage City, three sisters, Mary Ann Mueller of Humboldt, Nancy Chandler of Chanute and Phyllis Caler of Iola, 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for J.D. will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at the Community United Church of Christ in Carbondale. Burial will be in the Carbondale Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made payable to the Community United Church of Christ or the Carbondale First Responders and sent in care of Feltner Funeral Home, 818 Topeka Ave., Lyndon, KS. 66451.
