    • Obituary for Lee Roy Morey

LAWTON, Iowa -- Lee Roy Morey, 82, of Lawton passed away Friday, June 12, 2009, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Moville Trinity Lutheran Church, 323 South 4th in Moville, with Pastor James Berka officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, with lunch following, at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Moville. Online condolences may be sent to christysmith.com.

Lee Morey was born to Jess Earl and Mary (Baurly) Morey on May 12, 1927, in Primghar, Iowa. He was raised in the Luton and Salix area. Lee idolized his grandparents, Tom and Zelma Morey, and would skip days in grade school and walk to Sloan to spend the day with them.

On June 1, 1951, Lee and Darlene Meister were married in Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville by Pastor Arnold Schleuter. Lee worked for Ballou Brick and Tile in Sergeant Bluff as a wet brick setter. Later, he worked for Flasco Truck Bodies in Sioux City. In 1973 he was offered a transfer to Mid Equipment in Grundy Center, Iowa. The transfer was difficult since it meant leaving his position as assistant scout leader behind. When asked what the most fun was he ever had, his reply was "loading the Rambler with five boy scouts, tents and food and spending the week at Arnolds Park every summer."

Due to the loss of his eyesight, Lee had to quit his job at Mid Equipment in 1980 and went to the Iowa Department of the Blind in Des Moines for 10 months. Lee enjoyed getting the meals and had markings on everything around the house. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed teaching them how to ride bikes. They would call him and ask him if they could come for the night and ask him to make his macaroni salad.

Lee's favorite pastimes were dancing with the love of his life, Darlene, bowling on the blind bowling league in Waterloo. Lee belonged to the Grundy Center Lions Club and went to all the Lions' regular, district, state and national meetings. The couple spent winters in Mission, Texas from 1996 to 2008. In March of 2008, they moved to the assisted living facility in Lawton, Iowa. Lee later moved to Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.

Lee is survived by his wife, Darlene of Lawton; sons, Thomas Morey of Grundy Center, Michael and Anita Morey of Sioux City, Martin Morey of Sioux City, and Scott and Dana Morey of Callao, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Keith and Flossie Morey of Tacoma, Wash.; brothers-in-law, Verle and Connie Meister of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Paul Davis of Chicago, Ill.; sisters-in-law, Ruby Morey of Sloan, Iowa, Wilma Bollin of Anthon, Iowa, and Betty Meister of Correctionville, Iowa; and his favorite aunt, Ila Gulick of Sloan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jess and Mary Morey; father and mother-in-law, Otto and Ruth Meister; a stillborn son, Doyle Gene; an infant daughter, Coyla Ruth; a sister, Dixie Mae Davis; a brother, Leonard Morey; and brothers-in-law, Lloyd Meister of San Jose, Calif., Glenn Meister of Correctionville and A. Frank Bollin of Anthon.
